Love you, Tony

On why I love the Sopranos and Tony in particular...

I watched the last episode of the Sopranos last night. I was expecting something big, as there had been a lot of speculation about how it would end. I had avoided any peek into the ending before it was my time to stare at the TV. I won't get into details, in case you haven't seen it and plan to, but let's just say it didn't disappoint.

I'm a serial series addict. I don't watch everything but I've watched many, many shows in my lifetime. I have to say that the Sopranos is, by far, the greatest drama show ever made. Nothing compares to it. And the last episode provided an explanation to why it is so fantastic. It stays with you long after the show has ended. There are so many meanings behind everything that goes on in the show, there is so much to ponder about, so much that is said in silences and little actions, objects even...everything is deeply meaningful and sometimes deeply silly because those characters are human, they fail, they can be silly, immature, weak, pathetic.

The show wasn't always pleasant to watch, at times it was truly uncomfortable. You could either be enchanted by the normality of the family life, or completely disgusted and shocked at the characters' behaviour. It was like that with the main character, Tony Soprano. He did some very very bad things in the final season. Throughout the show, you could never count on him to behave in a particular way, you just never knew, because he was so human...but he was also a sociopath...And yet he could be so endearing. It'll be hard for me to forget about Tony Soprano, I'll still believe that he's out there, that he exists, he just doesn't come to my house every Monday anymore...

I think that this is the kind of show I would watch if I had a t.v. I know a lot of people whose opinions matter to me who have also been hooked. I suspect it's one of those that should be seen in order though. Which is a plus, as far as I'm concerned.

Kim: lol "order" is a plus! I think you'd like it. Sometimes the TV is not so bad...

Cathy: Great to have you back! Just thinking about all those Sopranos seasons unseen and ahead of you makes me a little envious ;) You should ask for it!

Jen: hehee I can't let go of the blog now. One thing it depends on is the people that come here and comment and as long as they're willing, I am willing, I guess. It's fun!
Like I said on the post, it's not always pleasant to watch, although it can be funny at times, but it's very rich and full of meanings. You'd love that, I'm sure!

Vesper: Oh it gets better! I think it gets better and better until the last episode. :) It took me a while longer to get into 6 Feet Under - I think it's because it's even MORE uncomfortable, it goes even deeper. But it got under my skin as well ;)

I agree. Tony was so real because he would act differently all the time. It was as if he were a walking example of opponent processing in psychology from all his therapy that he was acting against his previous self, always changing and growing but then getting caught and haunted by the same things over and over. He had to keep killing people to kill the possibility of his multiple identities leaking into all his multiple lives...but then he would secretly mourn over their loss.

I really, REALLY hope they make a movie or continue the series somehow (fat chance!). The ending of the series left me feeling hungry for more, and it was a good set up for a movie.
