I love it when the Sunday Scribblings prompt comes to meet something I've been thinking about.
Definition of solace:
alleviation or comfort
Etymology:
Latin solari 'to comfort, console'
It had never occured to me that solace comes from console. Solace immediately reminds me of the sun because sol means sun in portuguese. And console is consolar, meaning to offer comfort to those in need.
There is something deeply nourishing about this concept, as if the person in pain is either sore and you can apply a balm to their pain, or the person is somehow empty and your consolation can fill them with a little comfort and joy. In a way, the sun can have that effect on us too: you know those cold days when the sun is warm and you sit under it and you feel the warmth filling every fiber of your body. And it comes with vitamin D. So, even though the etymology doesn't say so, I like to think of con-solar as if it means with-sun.
There is something very Piscean about consoling those in pain and, as I'm currently working on my Venus in Pisces post, it's ringing a lot of bells. People with this positioning or lots of Pisces are very compassionate, they can devote themselves to taking care of others or a cause, similarly to Cancer. As for consoling ourselves, we should look at your astrological Moon, for our emotional needs. My Moon is in my 12th house so I seek solitude and daydreaming for consolation. If your Moon is in the 3rd house or Gemini you might seek communication or short travels for consolation; in the 5th house or Leo you might need to express your creativity, in the 9th house or Sagittarius you may turn to philosophy or travelling. And the list goes on...

Sinto-me "connected" com o meu Eu superior só de ver essa foto fantástica!
Certamente um sítio maravilhoso para nos desprendermos :)
awww the sun! Yes, I agree, Very comforting.. I love to feel it soak up my body. After my first solace this would be my second devil..As for the astrology .. Wow I wish I knew what it all meant, but someone once told me my sun and moon are in Pices.. Im a leo so I don't know what characteristics that reveals! If u do, I would be so interested to hear!( i don't even remember HOW they determined my sun/moon.!)
As I read this I felt so connected, then you mentioned piscean traits. I am a pisces, thus why I feel the way I do, about life, and this post.
Wonderful. Thank you.
This beautifully written, and it reminds me that I left service to others out of my own post. I love your semantic relationship of the sun to solace. It reminds me of John Denver's "Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy."
the etymology of "to console" makes me envision someone wrapped in another's arms...a warm embrace. embrace of the warm sun...
p.s. i really need to get around to sunday scribblings!!!
The sun. Yes! I hadn't thought of that.Good post
nice post, devil.
i don't normally confide in people, and so prayer is my only solace. and as contradictory as this may sound, i have also been apt to having others confide in me - it gets heavy at times, what with all the worries dumped on, but it helps me connect in a weird sort of a way with myself...i don't know if i am making sense here.
*exits*
Interesting thoughts..
Entertain me, will you?
Never thought of the sun as comnforting in that way, but yes, it's good.
Deepbluewater: Obrigada, é do Parque da cidade. :)
Lucy: hi! Yes, I'm happy to explain. First of all, if you're a Leo that means your Sun is in Leo, because that's what common horoscopes are about: the sun sign. But you can have Moon in Pisces, in fact that's similar to what I said about myself: being alone, daydreaming and spirituality are your ways to find solace with the Moon in Pisces.
J.C. Montgomery: That's fantastic, this must be a piscean post after all :)
Granny Smith: It certainly makes us happy sometimes, the sun on our shoulders, I think. Can't wait to read your post.
Vesper: Yes, that's the image I have too. :) Holding someone for consolation. hehe
Linda May: Good!Thanks.
Dharmabum: It's not that contradictory, some people seem to be magnets for other people's confessions, I once wrote about that, you must be one of them :) Prayer seems a good kind of solace!
Gautami: thanks :)
Anthony: Well, these days the sun can be a little too comforting, as in: HOT, but in winter it's wonderful.
wonderful post. i believe my solace comes from daydreaming and that instinctive knowing that's inside me...
this was such an interesting post, makes me curious to know where my moon is - a loner by nature and a bit creative - i love solitude, but it is not the source of solace for me --- as for the sun, well! - just bring it on, let it shine - shine - shine!!!
Food for thought here...I should get you to analyse me! How much do you charge?
How is the weather in Portugal? I am bugging my husband to take me there! Shame I am Portuguese and have never been there.
;(
I always find comfort in the sun...it warms you to your sol. Or, soul :)
xoxo
I also like the idea that solace is a 'place in the sun'..a place where warmth and comfort are found.
This is so interesting ... and synchronistic, too. After my mother's death just a few weeks ago, I felt my sister could do with some stress-free space and suggested that we take a few days away later in the summer, and her immediate response was "Oh, yes, in the sun, just to be in the sun would be lovely..." so we have booked a week away... in Portugal!
I don't have enough knowledge of astrology to know where our moons are, but something is calling us to sun and sea for consolation and solace.
the green of your pic shows solace too...:)
Shadow: I love that: the knwing inside, that's very important to me as well, even though I'm not sure I "know". ;)
Danni: thank you. It's easy to find out about your moon, if you go to any website that offers free horoscopes. Alternatively, you can send me your birthdate to astroskies@gmail.com and I can tell you in person ;)
Gillian: Right now it's raining, it doesn't look like Summer at all. But usually it's unbearably hot at this time of the year. I'd suggest September or October or Spring, you should really come!
If you mean astrological analysis, you should go to my astrology site, that's where I do business ;)
Niall: The sun is getting to your head, be careful ;) haha just kidding.
Greenishlady: Oh that's wonderful, hope you have a great time. The Summer is usually extended here so you're bound to get a lot of sun. Where are you staying? Algarve?
If: You must be a nature fan then :)
Astrology fascinates me and the sun is a fine source of solace! Nice post!
You always manage to find clever angles we hadn’t thought about! I really like that—con-solar, with sun. Just being inside and seeing the sun streaming through the windows makes me feel better about anything that’s got me screwed up. And being outside soaking up the sun on a coolish day is thousands of dollars-worth of therapy!
Tumblewords: Long time no see! Thanks.
MissA: Indeed! And I like saving money :)
